Psychopharmacology and Ethics of 21th Century

Abstract
|
|
|
The development of biopsychiatry and psychopharmacology makes the artificial chemical changes of the brain possible. That can make dramatic progress in the treatment of psychiatric disorders, but, at the same time, that causes serious and various
ethical problems. The use of the new antidepressant(SSRI) for normal healthy people to change their character ; the use of propranolol for musicians to improve their musical performance ; and the use of amphetamines to control the troublesome
behaviors
of hyperactive children are examples of this ethical problem. Is it ethical to use drugs to change people's character and enhance ability ? To what extent of human suffering should psychiatry define as its action and treatment target? This is one
of the
most important ethical challenges of the 21st Century. More insightful and comprehensive education about medical ethics ; a more active psychiatrists' peer review program ; and more active and integrative cooperation of psychiatrists with
individuals in
other areas who make efforts to solve human ethical problems are suggested as a solution.
